Yearling preparers, breeders and buyers are in for a big two weeks as we count down to the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales, this year to be held at Karaka on Monday 16 February and the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Wednesday 18 February.

We are proud of the Wai Eyre stallion offerings and are as always grateful to those who support them.

We will highlight some of those up for auction as we build into the biggest week on the standardbred sales calendar in New Zealand.

Lot 38 at Karaka is Raising Lazarus - a son of Lazarus, out of Surfsupsomewhere.

The only lot by Lazarus at the Auckland sale, he is prepared by Ross Mackay of Leanach Lodge in Ohaupo.

This colt brings a unique pedigree to the sale, with rich American bloodlines on the dam side.

Out of an unraced Somebeachsomewhere mare, the first dam is a half-sister to Our Sequel, who won 14 races in New Zealand and Australia and was placed at Group Three level.

His second dam is the Camluck mare, Oh What A Lady. She was bred and raced in the United States, where she won five races in her career.

Most notably though, she is a half-sister to one of the greatest pacing fillies in United States harness racing in She’s A Great Lady.

Voted Three-Year-Old Pacing Filly of the Year in 1995, She’s A Great Lady was a filly so good they named a Stakes race after her and she held a world record that lasted for over a decade.

The She’s A Great Lady Stakes for two-year-old fillies is held every September in Milton, Canada, with a stake of $470,000.

She’s A Great Lady won 26 races in her career, including the Breeders Crown, Mistletoe Shalee, Fan Hanover Final and the Nadia Lobell Final.

As a broodmare She’s A Great Lady left Lady Macbeach, herself voted two-year-old filly of the year and a Breeders Crown winner.

Those with a keen eye will also note that this colt’s third dam, Miss Donna Mayo, is also the dam of The Big Dog.

He stood at stud in New Zealand, and was the sire of Sirius Flight who as a broodmare left good performers after being imported to New Zealand, in Timeless Perfection (13 starts, 7 wins and 4 seconds and herself the dam of Group One winner, Rakero Rebel), Malak Uswaad (21 wins) and Red Moon Rising (7 wins).

For those looking for an international bloodline of greatness, this colt has it all on paper. And offers a unique opportunity to buy into one of the best families on offer.

But it’s not just his pedigree that has impressed.

Preparer Ross Mackay likes what he has seen in the colt to date, working with him to prepare for sale day at Karaka.

“He’s a lovely rich brown colour. He’s got a great temperament. He’s workmanlike, and willing to work with you.”

“An easy mover with a big overreach at a walk. And he’s a good size, and has the scope to grow into a lovely three-year-old,” Ross said.
