Six-year-old Lazarus stallion, Voukefalas, made a welcome return to the winner’s circle when collecting his first win for 2026 at Pocono Downs on Sunday NZ Time.

A former Sire Stakes winner, Voukefalas has competed at the highest level during his career, now winning 12 races and earning $USD 1,131,976 in stakes.

On Sunday he was forced to do things the hard way at Pocono, forcing his way to the lead at the half mile point in slushy conditions and taking pressure up until the home turn.

But at that point the son of Lazarus had his rivals gasping, and was allowed to slip away by driver Jordan Stratton and win going away by three lengths in an impressive time of 1.51.2 in testing racing conditions.

As a two year old Voukefalas recorded seven starts, three wins (New Jersey Sires Stakes) and three placings, for $414,000 in stakes.

At three he was again victorious in the New Jersey Sires Stakes Final and New Jersey Classic, and won four from 12 starts, with three seconds and $560,000 that year.

At four he set his best mile time of 1.47.3 in the Graduate Final at the Meadowlands and finished the year with 18 starts, 4 wins, 5 placings.

He remains Lazarus’s richest performer, and looks likely to continue to add to that tally over the coming season.

Siring a total of eight winners over the weekend in North America, Lazarus continues to hold his own at the highest level.

Simply Fast recorded his tenth victory, and is out of an Art Major mare. Proving that cross to be potent yet again, with the likes of The Lazarus Effect down under.

The Lizard is a four-year-old entire who was able to secure his 13th win in just 25 starts, and looks set to be in for a strong summer of racing.

Dismas is out of Kiwi mare, Itz Cherry Ripe, and was to the fore at Yonkers on Sunday. He’s had just the 32 starts to date and has now won seven of those.

Lazarus also produced Whoa Black Betty to finish a game second in the New Jersey Sire Stake Silver Final for three-year-old fillies, while Ooglesauras was gallant running fourth in the Platinum Final for colts and geldings.

Ooglesaurus set up an electric pace in slushy conditions after flying out of the gate from post six, he gallantly fought on in the home stretch and will aim for further feature racing at The Red Mile this year.

Other winners for Lazarus in the USA over the weekend include: Telitonthemountain, Azariya and Arthur Of Ourfaith.

To date in 2026 in the United States Lazarus sired starters have earned $1,493,842 this year alone.
