Two-year-old Lazarus filly, Sterl The Pearl, ended a bad run of racing luck to win an emphatic edition of the $25,000 New Jersey Home Grown series at The Meadowlands in New Jersey on Sunday.

Previously competing in the New Jersey Sires Stakes series, she finished third in her final last weekend after sitting parked.

Looking for redemption this week, Sterl The Pearl was sent to the front in the first quarter for driver Brett Beckwith running through the first half in 56.2.

She soon had her rivals chasing hard, and upon hitting the home turn was able to extend her lead, clearing out to win impressively by seven lengths in 1.51.3 – a new lifetime best for the two-year-old filly.

It was a great reward for the filly who has consistently placed throughout her short career to date and pick up a feature at The Big M.

Trainer Joe Bongiorno was wrapped with the result with the filly he describes as ‘small but mighty’.

“She’s doing great,” Joe said.

“She’s had a few unlucky trips in a row and she really bounced back this week with a super mile.”

“She did it super in 1.51 and a piece, and really showed some guts after a tough first over run the week before.”

Sterl The Pearl now takes her record to five starts, two wins and two placings. She is out of Cloud Diva, a Somebeachsomewhere mare.

Lazarus was also successful later on the card when Sargent Walt emerged from the pack to swamp the pacemakers late in the piece.

It was a bold turn of foot making up five lengths on the leaders after racing five back, then getting cover in the one-one into the turn.

Urged home deep on the track by driver Vincent Ginsburg, Sargent Walt saluted in 1.53 collecting his fourth win for the year and sixth overall.

Sargent Walt is out of A Rocknroll Dance mare, Cuts Like A Knife.

It capped off another great weekend for Lazarus in North America, with BC’s Odds On finishing second in the two-year-old colts and geldings $45,000 Home Grown, and Alritealritealrite picking up another win in Canada, with 11 wins to his record now.

Endofstory picked up his 19th win from just 56 starts at Pocono Downs, winning in 1.48.3 and taking his career earnings to just over $390,000.

Closer to home in Australia Lazarus produced Atlas The Titan to win at Gloucester Park and Two Cracked Corn delivered at Newcastle on Friday evening.
