Hawaiian Warfare wins Delaware Breeders heat
US Captain two-year-old, Hawaiian Warfare, put his hand up as a leading force in this year’s Delaware Breeders Stakes with a dominant win at Harrington Raceway on Tuesday NZ Time.
Trained by Erin Neilson, Hawaiian Warfare was driving confidently by Mike Cole to find the front in the early stages over the mile.
Showing his maturity and natural ability, the two-year-old lead a good tempo which saw the majority of the opposition fall away into the home turn, with just one threat to him Blue Jays Watchin on his back.
The duo were over 30 lengths clear of the third horse, and Hawaiian Warfare lifted again after being headed to rally back on the line winning by a neck.
Previously driver Mike Cole had indicated that Hawaiian Warfare was much better chasing down a horse in front of him, and that he had only ever been doing enough to win when in front. But the son of US Captain showed every ounce of strength to pull away again to win.
Yesterday saw three heats of the Delaware Breeders Stakes, with one more round of heats to go next week.
The top eight point qualifiers will advance to the $110,000 final on October 13 NZT.
Hawaiian Warfare has now had six starts, five wins and one third (which was against older horses).
He is out of Ukelele Blue Chip, a mare by Stay Hungry.
All seven of US Captains American foals have now either raced or qualified, with two individual winners to date.
