Impressive Lazarus three-year-old, Nymbal, took his winning record to two from two in Australia with another assertive win on Saturday night.

After winning the Group Three Redcliffe Derby last week, Nymbal was successful at Albion Park when stepping up in the $15,000 Burwood Stud 3YO Open Pace.

Drawing barrier one from the mobile, the gelding was able to use his early speed to hold up the lead before choosing to hand to $1.90 race favourite, Yottie.

Yottie had previously placed second in the G2 Gold Chalice Final and third in the G1 New South Wales Derby, so presented to be a strong race rival.

Approaching the final turn the hot pace had some race rivals fading, however Nymbal was travelling with plenty to offer and instead of waiting for the passing lane, driver Robert Morris opted to come outside of the favourite and soon rushed by to win easily by a length. The mile rate was 1.54.7 for the 2138m mobile.

Nymbal is now trained by KerryAnn Morris, who did have some questions about using his speed early on in the race initially.

“Yottie is a really nice horse, but I wasn’t sure if Nymbal could do the work early to choose who he was going to hand up to and kick on at the end. And I was surprised how quickly he picked him up, but it was really pleasing to see.”

And although the connections had positive hopes ahead of Nymbal commencing his Australian career, he has surpassed expectations.

“It’s been a little bit surprising, we always knew he was a nice enough racehorse in New Zealand. He seems to really be loving the Queensland weather.”

“He’s just got such high speed, at Redcliffe it didn’t look like he had much of a chance from where he was, but that that speed he has, all of a sudden he was able to put himself in the race.”

It hasn’t always been plain sailing, with his debut run delayed and having to be scratched.

“We’ve actually had a bit of a topsy turvy run with him, he got a foot abscess before he was due to have his first start at Menangle.”

“So we were fighting with that and having to change his shoeing so we weren’t sure he would have race fitness for the Redcliffe Derby.”

“But like nice horses do, he just showed up on the day and got the job done.”

There was initially talk about entering Nymbal in the Rising Sun next week, however KerryAnn and connections have elected to miss that and aim for the South East Derby instead.

“We want to look after him and not chuck him in the deep end too quick and keep his form going. There is the bigger (Queensland) Derby the week after as an option.”

For KerryAnn Nymbal has been a pleasant surprise and welcome addition to her team.

“He’s just a gentleman of a horse, he’s perfectly gaited he doesn’t even need a boot. And as Rob (Robert Morris) said to me, he’s just so fast point to point, he’s got so much speed and that really helps in those races.”

“When he gets to Menangle that is going to be a track that really will suit him well.”

Nymbal now takes his career record to 13 starts, 3 wins, 4 placings and $70,837 in earnings.

He is out of Art Major mare, Glenferrie EJ
