Son of Lazarus wins listed feature in Australia
Three-year-old Lazarus gelding Nymbal added yet another feature win to his record on Saturday night when successful in the Club Menangle Carousel Final at Listed Classic level.
Despite winning a previous heat of the series last weekend by six lengths, Nymbal was sent out as second favourite and soon found himself hemmed four back on the fence.
The hot favourite Palladium had won the Group One Queensland Derby earlier this year, and had come into the Carousel Final with a dominant heat win also just seven days prior.
Palladium used early speed to find the front from the starts and continued to dictate terms in front for the majority of the race, setting up a hot tempo.
After opting for cover and avoiding the early rush, Nymbal had settled fourth in the running. The race formation remained that way until 800m to go when Nymbal ended up four back on the fence as the running line moved forward.
As the favourite skipped clear Nymbal was desperate for room entering the home straight and found himself seven lengths off the leader.
Driver Robert Morris however found his way through the tiring opposition, and when the son of Lazarus saw clear air he exploded into the passing lane and ran down Queensland Derby winner to win by a length.
Nymbal ran the 2300m mobile event in 2.41.5, with a mile rate of 1.53. It was his sixth career success from just 20 starts, and his most notable since winning the Group 3 Redcliffe Derby in his first Australian race.
Nymbal has had just nine starts in Australia, and has won five of those races.
Purchased originally in New Zealand from the NZ Bloodstock Standardbred sales by Brian and Gareth Hughes, Nymbal was sold to Australia earlier this year and has now earned over $121,000.
Nymbal is out of Glenferrie EJ, an Art Major mare, proving that cross with Lazarus to again be a successful one alongside the feats of The Lazarus Effect.
