Promising two-year-old pacer We Will Rise Again rose to the occasion at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

The son of Lazarus picked up his second career win in the Jacobsen Headstones 2YO Pace, and he had to overcome some obstacles to do so.

We Will Rise Again gave driver Zachary Butcher a testing drive, after getting keen early in the running but soon settled in the one-one over the 1700m.

Biding his time as the favourite Sea You Now and Seaside Legacy scooted clear on the home turn, We Will Rise Again was extricated from his cover and once balancing out set about running the duo down.

Showing a searing turn of foot and huge heart, We Will Rise Again blazed by to win by a neck going away on the line. The final 800m in 57.10 and quarter in 28.6.

Trained by Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan, the two year old now has had two wins from five starts, and has placed third twice also – including at Group One level.

With plenty of experience and improvement to come, We Will Rise Again has emerged as an exciting competitor in the northern juvenile ranks.

We Will Rise Again is out of Gracelands Rose, by Sunshine Beach out of Tupelo Rose, and was bred by Dr Ian McKay and Ross McKay.

Friday night also saw game performances from other progeny by Lazarus.

Two-year-old filly Jorja (a full sister to Jeremiah) was narrowly beaten into second by a head in the Dunstan Sires Stakes 2YO Fillies heat at Addington, she’s now had two starts for two seconds including one at Group Three level in national record time.

Three-year-old filly Time For Change was a game second in the Metro Pacers heat for trainer/driver Zachary Butcher at Alexandra Park.

Jeremiah lined up on the Group Three Holmes DG and after setting the pace from the mid stages recorded another feature placing, finishing third behind his stablemates Bettor Knuckle Up and Merlin.

Jeremiah continues to compete for his place in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, with The Lazarus Effect already a confirmed starter in the great race from just 15 five-year-olds by Lazarus in New Zealand.

The Lazarus Effect will run at the North Canterbury trials this Tuesday.

Lazarus also recorded placings over the weekend with Rivergirl Bella at Cambridge and Bruno Brigade at Methven.
