The only offering by On A Streak at this year’s Yearling Sales has been snapped up by Stonewall Stud for an impressive price of $50,000.

Lot 103 is a filly by On A Streak, out of Glenferrie Unixa – a French bred mare who has done a wonderful job at stud to date leaving four Group winners from four starters.

Glenferrie Unixa has produced Une Belle Allure, former Australian three-year-old trotting filly of year, and a Group One winner of the Victoria Trotters Derby and Need for Speed Princess Final. And has also left Hilltop Hugh, who won the Group One Vicbred Super Series last November.

Offered by Yabby Dam Farms, the On A Streak filly had impressed her preparer Jamie Bartlett with her combination of manners, scope and presence.

And she caught the eye of the Stonewall Stud’s Jill Stockman during the inspection process too.

“We try and get around the yearlings at least twice, if we can, to inspect them, and when we went out to look at Jamie’s yearlings I had propped my chair outside of the On A Streak filly’s stall,” Jill explained.

“She had her head over the stall, snuggling into me and she had a great nature. So, the boys had a look over her on the day and walked her out, she is just a lovely looking filly with a great eye, great ears and is a nice long filly.”

Despite her amazing pedigree, Jill was drawn to the filly and her presence first and foremost.

“I didn’t know too much about On A Streak at the time, but the filly just sold herself on type, you’d like her for that alone without even having to look at her page.”

Trotters have been part of a new game plan for Stonewall Stud in recent years.

“Historically we have been more about the pacers, but we are trying to build up the trotting side of the business a little now.”

“If you look at some race cards half the races are trots now, so you can’t take part if you don’t have anything to race in those. So in the past couple of years we have purchased some really nice young stock that should be starting to race in the next 12 months or so.”

The yearling sales are a hectic time for the Stonewall Stud business, with no stone left unturned in the selection and inspection process.

“Steve and Mandy (Telfer) usually start looking at the yearlings on type first, then I tend to look into the pedigree side of things.”

“We start looking at the yearlings in person from January, and we’ve been down to the parades in Southland and Canterbury. We do try and get around them at least twice if we can, but that’s obviously easier for the northern horses for us.”

And after a huge day at Karaka where they purchased four yearlings, Jill is already down in Christchurch preparing for Wednesday’s sale day.

“I’ve flown down this morning, and now I’m out at the farm before we head into the sales parades. We’ve got a short list of horses we’d like to see before the sale tomorrow, so it’s going to be another busy couple of days!”

Regardless of how the sale goes tomorrow for Stonewall, Jill is just thrilled she got the On A Streak filly secured on Monday.

“At the northern sale she was the one I wanted to take home. She was it.”

We wish the Stonewall team all the best with their purchase.

Yearling sale action continues on Wednesday at Christchurch Agricultural Park from 11am.

Lazarus has six yearlings for sale in Christchurch, including a half-brother to Better Knuckle Up who is sure to gain attention.
