Lazarus three-year-old Ooglesaurus has been a real project for trainer Joe Bongiorno over the past 12 months, and that hard work could possibly pay off this weekend.

Ooglesaurus has come through two $17,500 heats of the Bobby Weiss series at Pocono Downs unbeaten, showing huge heart and a great turn of speed.

In his most recent heat he burned the gate early to lead showing a good turn of foot, before handing up to the favourite, Stingman.

Not content on a mere placing, Ooglesaurus pulled out of the trail to sprint hard and bowl past the pacemaker, winning easily going away by two lengths at the line.

The $50,000 Bobby Weiss Three-Year-Old Colts and Geldings final will be held this Sunday New Zealand time at Pocono, and the gelding has drawn barrier five and been installed early favourite.

His trainer, Joe Bongiorno, has a lot of time for the son of Lazarus.

“He’s a super nice gelding who has really developed from two to three. He’s just matured a tonne,” said Joe.

“He has a really quick turn of speed, and a lovely attitude.”

Since entering his barn in 2025 the horse has been a bit of a work in progress, but as a three-year-old has really put his best foot forward.

“I got him mid last year in his two-year-old season and he was super green.”

“I trained him back to our style at three and he’s just been a machine so far. I’m hoping he can carry that into some bigger races this season.”

The Bobby Weiss Series consisted of three rounds of heats, of which Ooglesaurus won his first two, before being freshened and missing last week’s racing.

He’s pleased his trainer and despite the draw Joe is hopeful of a good showing in the $50,000 feature.

“I expect him to be super tough in the Weiss final this week.”

And through the final Joe has some lofty plans ahead for Ooglesaurus.

“I am aiming him to be good in Kentucky at the Red Mile in the spring and summer.”

To date this year Ooglesaurus has won three of his four starts, including one at the Meadowlands, he’s also place third.

His years best came in at his last start when winning in 1.52 and looks set to improve on that time as racing continues.

Ooglesaurus is out of Real Artist mare, Oogle Google.
